The Depths of Computer Science: Why It Is Important for Schools Today

Alivia Rogers (‘27), Freshman Writer

Taking a look into this relatively new outreach to learning, Mr. Huber expresses why kids should be excited and why this program is for the greater good. “I think the potential for building new and exciting things is high in computer science. For example, we have access to an Apple Vision Pro™ which has a very limited App Library which allows students to build apps and release them. There is a lot of space for invention on their part.”

When I asked Mr. Huber what got him started on computer science he shared that he “wanted to build an app for [his] math students: quadratic factoring on their phones.” He also added that “doing it was relatively easy and [that] it was the idea of doing something new and easy for [him] to do.” Students can learn to build apps for their personal use, like Mr. Huber, and release them for others' benefit as well. Making apps can be a great success for a limited amount of work. Mr Huber says that “it doesn't take much to make the next flappy bird or wordle” which are games that are very popular around the world. Casady believes that this computer science program can make students who produce the next best thing.

One of the biggest reasons that Casady has required Computer Science for students is how it looks on a student’s resume. When colleges look at resumes, they look for things that stand out. “It looks good and is an opportunity to stand out because not a lot of schools have this,” Mr. Huber said. Since computer science is not required in most schools, it does stand out. Mr. Huber states, “It offers an opportunity to broaden their narrative on who they are and it shows skills beyond computer science but also writing, reason, problem-solving, and creativity.”

Computer science has become an intricate part of Casady’s curriculum and plans to stay that way. Computer science is not only a good, fundamental class to have under a student’s belt, but helps with life skills in the future. Casady shapes students to be ready for the real world and believes that computer science will be the next great step to achieving their academic goals.
