Casady vs Holland Hall: The Start to an Unconventional Season

After five consecutive corners against them, it looked rough for the Casady Cyclones coming out of the first quarter. During the huddle, Coach Madison Gilbert told the team, “Score in the first two minutes of the quarter.” Senior Abbey Kays (‘21) did it in one minute and fifteen seconds. That goal was the turning point for the Cyclones, and they won the game 2-0 with another goal scored in the fourth quarter by Abbey Kays, with an assist from Katherine Hawley (‘21).

On Friday, September 11, our Casady Cyclones varsity field hockey team faced the Holland Hall Dutch at home in a long-awaited rematch on Edwards Field. The Cyclones won the game, 2-0, and will face the Dutch once again in the Episcopal Cup. 

The first game in a rather unconventional season, on Friday night the Cyclones were excited and ready to beat the Holland Hall Dutch and celebrate Senior Night. It was also new Head Coach Madison Gilbert’s first game with the Cyclones, who said she was “definitely excited that her first game would get to be against [her] alma mater,” and she knew we had the leg up on them. The team acknowledged their seniors with flowers and photographs outside the Cyclone pep tunnel. Abbey Kays, Katherine Hawley, Sydney Geiger (‘21), Victoria Cohn (‘21), Grace Utz (‘21), Lucy Richmond (‘21), Madge Lister (‘21), and Elliot Reiger (‘21) all were celebrated before the game on Edwards Field. 

As far as Covid restrictions and the cancellation of the SPC championship, Abbey Kays said that the team is trying to “maintain traditions that we’ve held in the last years, and celebrate every moment we have and just be thankful that we even have games to play.”
