Opening Day 2018 Recap

Euphoria is defined in the Merriam Webster Dictionary as a feeling of well-being or elation. I would argue that the feelings of every single baseball fan, whether he or she be a casual Rockies fan to an extremist Cardinals fan, are somewhat synonymous with euphoria.
Opening Day 2018 served some starving souls what they wanted: home runs and strikeouts. The Cubs beat the Marlins, with both Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo going yard. Ian Happ, a 23-year-old, is the youngest Cubs player to hit a home run on Opening Day since 1955.
The Orioles edged out the Minnesota Twins in Mobtown, 3–2. Manny Machado connected on a double in his first at-bat. The highlight of the game, of course, was Adam Jones’ 11th-inning walk-off home run, providing the Orioles their 8th consecutive Opening Day win.
The New York Mets beat the Cardinals 9–4, with a lot of help from Fabio himself, Noah Syndergaard. Syndergaard had 10 strikeouts in five innings played.
Opening Day never disappoints, because baseball has a weird way of augmenting everything around it. The city becomes happier, the bars fuller, the fans rowdier, and the losses harder. Opening Day is euphoric, sure. But baseball itself is a game of passion and love, not just happiness. That’s what makes Opening Day so fun. There were no huge surprises. Giancarlo hit a home run during his first at-bat for the Yankees. But that’s not really surprising. Everything seemed to follow Spring Training pretty accordingly. Who cares? Baseball is just a fun sport to be a fan of.
