Mamma Mia: Fall Musical Preview

88

After a long hiatus, Casady Musical Theater is finally back in person! Entering into a world of blue waters and baklava, the Casady Theater Department presents Mamma Mia! as their fall production and invites everyone to come laugh, sing along, and feel the magic as thirty Upper Division students take the stage on November 11, 12, and 13 — you’ll quickly find yourself “having the time of your life,” as ABBA would say!

This hit musical, also made into a movie, features a young girl, Sophie Sheridan, soon to be married and on a journey to find her father. Sophie lives on the beautiful Greek island of Kalokairi with her mother, Donna, who runs her own inn. Donna, spunky and independent, is reluctant to see Sophie so curious about her father. The real surprise comes when Sophie’s three possible fathers make an appearance at her wedding. Wonder who could have arranged that? The rest of the show follows the flourishing relationships and adventures of all the wedding-goers, from the iconic “Donna and the Dynamos” to the bride and groom themselves, Sophie and Sky.

I sat down and talked to Katie Spiropoulos (‘22) and Jonah Craine (‘22), seniors with leading parts in the musical, and asked them to uncover a little bit about the production. They both expressed enthusiasm about the show and how they’ve been growing into their roles. Katie plays Rosie, Donna’s sassy and charismatic best friend and former Dynamo. Katie, enthusiastic to talk about the show, expressed that she loves her “girl power moments and trio work” with Tanya, played by Savannah Shelton (‘22), and Donna, played by Sydney Flemming (‘22), but also appreciates her scenes with Jonah, who plays Bill Anderson, during the iconic “Take a Chance on Me” number. Mr. Dema, director of the show, is working diligently with his actors and actresses to help them perfect their vocals and get into character.

After I asked Jonah and Katie what spectators can look forward to, Katie smiled and said, “This is just one of those shows that makes you forget your cares and worries. I’m so excited to share our little 90s Greek world with the Casady Community! There’s not a single scene where you won’t be laughing or crying.” Similarly, Jonah claimed that he is “proud of all the effort that people have put into the show.” He finished by exclaiming that he and the rest of the cast “would really appreciate it if you came out and saw it!”

Filled to the brim with dynamic song and dance, this show is sure to be spectacular. Don’t miss it!
